The mention of the Presley name invokes memories of the past and is instantly recognizable and connected to “Elvis.” However, when you talk about Presley these days, it is important to specify which Presley is the subject. Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie Presley returned to Atlantic City this Saturday Evening, November 10th at the rump Taj Mahal.
Touring for the first time in five years in support of her new album, “Storm & Grace,” Presley thanked the audience for coming to the show in light of “Superstorm Sandy which wrought so much havoc on the shore area which caused the cancellation of all the shows last weekend.” Presley took the stage wearing a black dress wearing her long dark hair down. It was uncanny to see how much of the time she unknowingly duplicated many of her fathers looks and expressions while singing. The Elvis Presley expressions seem unplanned, normal and natural.
Those hoping to hear the Elvis sound of old were surprised by Presley's performance of a sweet and soulful blues-pop song that owed nothing to her father, Elvis. Her set kicked off with, “Over Me,” followed by “Weary,” a slow country tune, she co-wrote with Richard Hawley, that seemed to strike a cord with the audience.
Songs such as, “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” and ”Un-Break” and have a drawl and twang that brings you back to southern roots. Presley’s husband, Michael Lockwood, a gangling figure at her left, added punch on lead guitar throughout. The only departure from her new album in the hour plus performance came from the encore songs.
When the band returned to the stage for the encore set, they were very appreciative and elated by the response of the fans ramped up crowd in the room. In response to the audience, they gave the debut single, “Lights Out,” all they had to give to the song which really aroused the audience. For the last song of the evening they performed a rocking rendition of “Need to Know,” a Tom Petty cover.
Presley clearly never needed to write or perform a single song in her life, but it’s clear she has a genuine love to be on stage performing. From the response of the audience it would be a real loss if she choose not to continue doing more of it.
Lisa Marie Presley was born on February 1, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. The daughter of Elvis Presley, she dropped out of junior high and began abusing illegal drugs. Later, Presley turned to music for solace, and released her first album, “To Whom It May Concern,” in 2003 at age thirty-five co-writing all the songs on the album. When released it received acclaim from reviewers. She was briefly married to both Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. On January 22, 2006, Lisa Marie married for the fourth time. Her current husband is guitarist, producer and director Michael Lockwood. The couple welcomed fraternal twins Harper and Finley Lockwood on October 7, 2008.
In addition to her music career, Lisa Marie serves as a co-trustee of the Elvis Presley Estate along with her mother Priscilla, and the National Bank of Commerce. She also continues to have a connection with Scientology through her mother, the Apple School, and the Celebrity Center rehab facility.
