YES, I SING. SO WHAT?

A MOUTH WHICH LOOKS LIKE A HEART, JUST LIKE HER DAD. A SMOKY VOICE, THE OPPOSITE OF HER DAD’S TENDER VOICE. AT 44 YEARS, AFTER FOUR WEDDINGS AND FOUR CHILDREN, THE DAUGHTER OF “ELVIS THE PELVIS” COMES OUT WITH AN ALBUM WHICH IS “THE TAGLINE OF MY LIFE”
Lisa Marie is a brave woman. Only child of the king Elvis and Priscilla, heir of Graceland, valued 100 millions in Memphis, in her life had the chance to do everything. Everything except choosing the same path in which her dad is a legend. Licit but inadvisable. To tell the truth Lisa Marie tried to demolish her destiny: she left high school and went through a period of drugs and rebellions; she married four times (in 1994 even with Michael Jackson), had four children and committed to charity. But then, her destiny was stronger. Just like Michael Corleone in “The Godfather”: when he was younger he tried to find another way of life, to become a good man and soldier… but when something runs in your veins and is part of you, it wins the day. So, Lisa Marie gave up: she became singer, or better, songwriter. And today, at 44, she promotes her third album called Storm and Grace. The legend says that when she was three, her father found her in front of a mirror singing.
“At Graceland me and dad had our rooms very close, and when he was at home we used to spent a lot of time together, just the two of us. For me it was the best thing in the world. He played with me, spoiled me. There were no rules. The strict person in my family was my mum.”
She was graced by the presence of her father until he died in 1977, when she was 9 years old. But she is marked with this part of her life and in 1997 she made a duet with her dad.

WAS IT DIFFICULT, FOR YOU, CHOOSING TO BECOME A SINGER?
Yes, it was, but I had no choice. I think it would be cool to have another talent, to do another job. But singing and writing are the only things that I like to do. And I know how to do them.

DID THE SHOW BUSINESS WORLD ACCEPT YOU WELL?

People think it was easy for me to enter that world. In part is true, of course my surname allowed me to open various doors, but on the other hand it became an obstacle. You have always to demonstrate you can hold a candle to, but at the same time you have to be an indipendent artist.

WERE THERE TIMES WHEN YOU DREAMED TO NOT HAVE THE NAME PRESLEY?
No, I’m very proud of my father. Moreover, with my last album I think I succeded to be Lisa Marie, before than Presley. With my previous albums I did tend to hide behind the sound, in Storm and Grace, on the contrary, everything is more open, sincere, vulnerable.

ARE YOU SPEAKING OF YOUR ALBUM OR YOURSELF?
Well, I guess both. The title of my album is the tagline of my life.

WHAT IS “STORM” FOR YOU?
Is a place where money, fame, power are, where people is always ready to step on you. And I was born there…

DID YOU FEEL BETRAYED BY SOMEONE?

For years I have been surrounded by people who pretended to be my firends. They used to take advantage of everything, and still today they have no regrets. If I did something cruel to someone I would be tormented by this.

ARE YOU SPEAKING OF THE PEOPLE OF SCIENTOLOGY?
I don’t speak about my religion and I can’t say names. Believe me, I would like so much to say all those names, but I would find myself in a terrible situation. And I don’t need this now, I’m finally happy, I wanna enjoy the tour, my children and my husband.

IS THIS YOUR “GRACE”?
Yes, even if inside of me I have both storm and grace, with other explosive feelings. Anyway yes, I wanted to start all over again: I changed my life drastically. I got rid of all the dangerous people in my life and I moved with my family in England. It is a wonderful place where me and my husband want to raise our twins.

IS YOUR MARRIAGE A HAPPY ONE?
Yes, I’ve known Michael for nine years and we’re married since 2006, we are very compatible. But I have to tell the truth: I appreciate my marriage more thanks also to my experiences I had in the past.

DO YOU MEAN YOUR WEDDINGS WITH DANNY KEOUGH, MICHAEL JACKSON AND NICOLAS CAGE?

This is another thing I don’t want to talk about. I only say that everything you do in your life is something that will help you in a future, that helps you growing. And I don’t thing I would change anything in my life.

NOTHING, REALLY?
Well, to be completely honest, if I could go back I would finish high school. But I also think that the American system helps only those who have a scientific mind and tend not to encourage the artistic side of the students. I did very well at humanistic subjects, but I was terrible at math. At the time I was rebellious and I thought that certain things were useless in life, so I left school.

WOULD YOU LET YOUR CHILDREN DO THE SAME?
No, at alll. My oldest children, Riley and Ben, have already finish high school. My little ones are only 4, but with a view to that, I would never let them leave school. At the same time I teach my children that in life also mistakes are useful and that only if you knew sadness you can reach happiness.

WHICH WAS THE SADDEST MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE?

Death.

OF YOUR DAD?
Of many people I’ve known.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE AFTERLIFE?
Yes, I believe that out there there is a dimension with no time and space. And I also think that if someone dies before his moment, his spirit keeps on living here with us in order to finish what they were suppose to do.

LIKE “GHOST” WITH PATRICK SWAYZE AND DEMI MOORE?
Yes, or “The Sixth Sense”. Now, I may sound crazy but…

WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

I mean that there were times when I felt something, spiritual presences…

WHEN WE ASKED WHICH WERE THOSE PRESENCES, SHE DIDN’T REPLY. BUT MAYBE WE CAN GUESS…

I'm fairly certain that the presences she is talking about is MJ (and also maybe her father). I remember her saying that she was crying her eyes out right before MJ died, which I thought shows how interconnected their souls were. It's almost like she could feel him slipping away. She has also said in a past interview that she had dreams where she had conversations with deceased loved ones, and now here she is saying she feels spiritual presences. It's gotta be MJ, and if it is, then I think it is wonderful that even in death...they still manage to connect.
